The geologic record is punctuated by episodes of exceptional organic carbon sedimentation and burial in marine settings, which may be coupled to major perturbations of the global carbon cycle. However, the ultimate causes leading to oxygen deficient bottom waters and, in turn, to organic carbon preservation remain debated.
The integration of marine and terrestrial palynological proxy studies (e.g., organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts, pollen and spores) can shed light into the causes and mechanisms leading to such deposits. These studies help understanding and quantifying the organic matter burial and impact on climate and oceanography. However, distinguishing between productivity and preservation overprint in such deposits is still a matter of debate.
We invite contributions on integrated marine and terrestrial palynology, also including other organic proxies, to unravel the causes, mechanisms and consequences of such deposits on global carbon cycle and climate. Contributions focused on the understanding of the role of productivity versus preservation are particularly welcome.

The Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation hereby invites applications for a 2-yrs postdoc project in Palaeoceanography, which will be carried out within the framework of a major research program dealing with the marine climate and ecosystem around the Faroe Islands. This fellowship from the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation will be administratively managed by the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland.

Applications will be evaluated by the Program Steering Committee including representatives from the Faroese Fisheries Laboratory, GEUS, the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation, the Danish Meteorological Institute and the National Institute for Aquatic Resources.
Under a scenario of future climate warming, warm water inflow from the northern North Atlantic into the Nordic Seas, a region where deep convection takes place, is of global importance. Climate models suggest that the North Atlantic overturning circulation will weaken as a result of warming, a stronger hydrological cycle, and (Greenland) ice melting. The location of the Faroe Islands is crucial with respect to the main pathways of this warm water transport, which occurs via the Faroe-Shetland Channel and via the Iceland-Faroe Ridge, west of the Faroes. Together with Denmark Strait, the latter areas also provide the main passage for the cold, deep return ('Overflow') current, which is a major component of the global thermohaline circulation system. Future changes in global climate and ocean circulation may thus be expected to have major consequences for ocean circulation patterns around the Faroes, which has important implications for the marine ecosystem and fisheries in the area, and, consequently, for the Faroese economy.
An important objective of the postdoc project '" Reconstruction of Holocene North Atlantic Ocean variability around the Faroe Islands" is to focus on Holocene time slices known for warm climate anomalies (e.g. Holocene Thermal Maximum, Medieval Warm Period) and reconstruct ocean circulation patterns and possible changes in primary production during these periods. The studies will be based on the analysis of marine sediment cores, using microfossils (e.g. diatoms, and/or dinoflagellates, foraminifera) and relevant additional sediment proxy-data also including grain size parameters. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with other (postdoc, PhD) researchers and partner institutions involved in the program, i.e. the Faroese Fisheries Laboratory, the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), and institutions from Aarhus and Copenhagen University. Moreover, for these palaeoceanographic studies, cooperation is envisaged with foreign institutions in Norway (Bergen, Tromsø), Sweden (Göteborg), and The Netherlands (Royal NIOZ, Texel).
